DaaS 8 – Group Policy Optimizations

This article contains Group Policy optimizations for DaaS 8 installations running Windows 10. To access Group Policy, use the Run dialog (Start → Run) to launch “gpedit.msc”. Then, follow the guides below to configure each optimization depending on your use cases.

 

General Optimizations

These policies help within a DaaS environment to ensure Group Policy applies properly.

  • Navigate to Computer Configuration>Administrative Templates
    • Locate System/Group Policy
      • Enable ‘Configure user Group Policy loopback processing mode’
      • Set to ‘Replace’
    • Locate System/Logon
      • Enable ‘Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon’
      • Disable ‘Show first sign-in animation’
    • Locate Windows Component/Windows Update
      • Enable ‘Do not include drivers with Windows updates’

Set PCOIP Session Variables

These settings have been found to be the successful across a wide variety of use cases. It is possible you may still need to adjust these values to fit your needs.

  • Navigate to Computer Configuration>Administrative Templates
  • Confirm you can see the PCOIP Session Variables
    • Enable “Turn off Build-to-Lossless feature” by selecting the check box.
    • Enable “Configure PCoIP image quality levels”
      • Set Minimum Image Quality to 30
      • Set Maximum Image Quality to 70.
      • Set Maximum Frame Rate to 16.

Enable Clipboard Access

This feature will allow users to copy/paste content (data) between the local client and the DaaS desktop using the clipboard. Prior to enabling this functionality, it is recommended to review any company specific security or compliance policies.

NOTE: The clipboard does not enable copy/paste or drag and drop of files between the desktop and local client. To transfer files please review the VMware documentation on transferring files.

For PCOIP:

  • Navigate to Computer Configuration>Administrative Templates
  • Confirm you can see the PCOIP Session Variables policy template folder
    • Enable ‘Configure clipboard redirection’
      • Set to ‘Enabled in both directions’

For BLAST:

NOTE: The file transfer setting for BLAST enabled file transfer for the HTML BLAST protocol used through the web desktop portal. For more information on transferring files via HTML BLAST please review the VMware documentation.

  • Navigate to Computer Configuration>Administrative Templates
  • Confirm you can see the VMware BLAST policy template folder
    • Enable ‘Configure clipboard redirection’
      • Set to ‘Enabled in both directions’
    • Enable ‘Configure File Transfer’
      • Set to ‘Enabled both upload and download’

Configure BLAST Quality Settings

These settings have been found to be the successful across a wide variety of use cases. It is possible you may still need to adjust these values to fit your needs.

  • Navigate to Computer Configuration>Administrative Templates
  • Confirm you can see the VMware BLAST policy template folder
    • Enable ‘Image Quality’
      • Set Low JPEG Quality to 20
      • Set Mid JPEG Quality to 40
      • Set High JPEG Quality to 80
    • Enable ‘Max Frame Rate’
      • Set to 16
    • Enable H.264
    • Enable H.264 Quality
      • Set Maximum QP tp 36
      • Set Minimum QP to 10
