DaaS Glossary of Terms

The pattern is the template from which the desktop pool(s) are deployed.

Persona Management (Profiles)

Persona Management is a feature that allows administrators to redirect user folders and/or roam parts of the user profiles. This can be done locally or via group policy. It can be used in conjunction with Windows Folder Redirection and Windows Roaming Profiles or it can be used in lieu of the Windows policies.

Dynamic Pool

A dynamic pool is a pool of desktops that is built from a base pattern. The desktops are refreshed to the base at each user log off / restart. The desktops are centrally managed through the pattern and the pool refresh process. Users get a different desktop on each logon.

Static Pool

A static pool is a pool of desktops that is built from a base pattern. The desktops in the pool not managed by the pattern and the pool does not have a refresh process. Users are mapped to specific desktops.

Tenant Admin Portal

The tenant admin portal (DaaS Enterprise Center) is where management of tenant specific tasks are done. These tasks include pool management, pattern management, domain configuration and mapping users to pools or desktops. Only users that have permissions are allowed to access this portal.

Tenant Desktop Portal

The desktop portal is where users log in to access their desktops via a web browser. The user’s desktops and/or pools will be shown. The user can set their default desktop and set basic preferences with display and connection experience for RDP.

Utility Server

The utility server can be an existing server in the customer’s virtual data center (VDC) or it can be a new server created in an existing or new VDC. The utility server is typically used for AD, DHCP, DNS and File and printer services. Note if using persona management for folder redirection and roaming profiles, the server will need enough storage capacity to accommodate the user profiles.

Access Points

The VMware Horizon DaaS Access Point allows end users outside a tenant’s internal network to access their virtual desktops without requiring VPN software inside the desktop, or the endpoint.
